Minnesota again

June 7th, 2008

Quarterfinals of the Pro tour didn’t go so well for CWB today. Only two riders from our team qualified and they were Andrew Adkison and Jimmy Trask. I guess its true that you just can’t have your best run everyday and sometimes i believe the judges opinions are wrong, but I guess opinions can’t be wrong cause they are opinions. The riders should be able to vote and approve a judge before they let them judge. Bryan Hutton actually qualified but then do to complications they put Shaun Murray through instead and threw my awesome friend B Hutts under the bus. Its fine though, things can’t always go the way of CWB even though we wish it would (in my mind and most other riders a mute switch heelside 360 is harder than an ungrabbed regular backside 360, and a melon backside 540 is alot harder than a toeside 720). I guess its how the cookie crumbles hahaha. Everything has its ups and downs and the Pro Tour is still alot of fun. Wish you all could be here with us. Laughing and joking around. And battling at iCopter. Thanks for supporting us. Without you guys we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. And I really appreciate it. iPhone.

Getting my blog on

June 6th, 2008

Well i first will address the fact that I was only trying to do Zane a favor by watching a movie this evening. I knew he was debating on weather or not to take two hours of his tightly packed schedule to watch Zohan sometime this week. I was gracious enough to take two hours of my time to decide if it was worth his time or not. In the end it was and now Zane can go to Zohan without wondering if he should be addressing some urgent emails instead. You’re welcome. Glad I could help. Also I swung the sledge hammer more than a few times today putting in tent spikes.
Also weakest link in the blog? I believe I had the first blog. No big deal. Besides that it’s quality not quanity. You should look into that…
Moving on:
Since my first blog I have been doing quite a bit.
The season is full on now. I’ve been traveling on the weekends and trying to catch up and get riding time during the week.
We did an road trip to Texas in the beginning of May. It was awesome. We made a few stops along the way. One in Panama city and another 3 day stop in Hammond, LA with my friend Chip Smith. You can check the details below on derek’s blog or in the new WBM. I will have a small snapshot of the trip in a “My Scene” article on Chip Smith and the rest of the Rukus boardshop crew. They were gracious host. We finished up that trip with a fun as usual cable stock at TSR. It was an awesome time.
The next weekend was the Royer Rumble in Norther Cali. It was quite an event. Mike Royer and his crew really did a top notch job of putting on an event for both the riders and the spectators.
After that was Acworth, Master, Ft. Worth tour stop and this weekend in Minnessota for the MCPWT. I would give you more details but it’s almost 1 a.m. and I have to compete tomorrow. I have an event every weekend until October I’ll keep you posted along the way.
This blog was a bit of a catch up to speed but the next to come will have more details.
ride on, andrew

Run Way Models

June 6th, 2008

Today on 06.06.08, I got to experience what it is like to be a run way model and I got a behind the scenes look at the magical life style. So today, my flight left Orlando airpot at 10am, and I landed in Detroit at like 1 pm. From there I almost missed my connecting flight to the Twin Cities where the MCPWT stop #3 is. So we all board the plane and everything is going as planned and then we come to a halt on the run way. We sat on the run way for about 45 minutes before the captain came over the intercom and told us that we were going to have to go back to the gate, and that we needed more fuel and that we were to heavy to take off. By this time the cabin had cooled off to a mere 100 degrees F. So we go back to the gate and sat there for another hour while they took 6 luck passengers off the plane and refuled. [editors note: before we boarded the plane, I for some reason decided to buy a book which I dont even read, anyhow I purchased, “I HOPE THEY SELL BEER IN HELL”, by Tucker Max.] Anyhow by this time I had read about 75 pages of the new book which is amazing and I recommend it to most. We then get cleared for take off and we head back out onto the tarmac only to find out that we still cant take off. So we sit on the runway once again for another hour and fifteen minutes until we finally take off towards Twin Cities. [editors note: also while on the plane, I tried to download a thermometer on my iPhone to see what the actual temp was..no luck.] Long story short, come to find out, the life of a run way model is not that glamorous and I wouldnt trade my job for that in a million years.

Minnesota

June 6th, 2008

Were in Minnesota and it is cold. Word on the street is that tomorrow a high pressure front is supposed to come through and there is supposed to be a headwind of up to 20 mph’s. Suck. Right now though I am sitting in a hotel room with comrades Corey Bradley and Trevor Hansen creator of the Marius. We were discussing if we can swear on the blog. I don’t think it would be appropriate. And also uncharacteristic of us because none of us actually curse. In all seriousness though. We were actually discussing the overall amazingness of The Original Dominators Backside Bigger Spin. Ridiculous is it not?!?!? We all at CWB just think he is the cat’s meow. And he is. Now down to business. I told you I would teach you how to do an Heelside Indy Back Roll to Backside 180. And here it is.

Step One- You need to make sure that you have a really solid indy back roll as well as a solid backside 180 and are comfortable landing blind.
Step Two- Start out as wide as you can. The farther out you start the less speed you have to use cutting in to clear the wake. Your momentum will carry you across. When you reach the wake wait till the peak of it to initiate to the flip. As you coming off the wake immediately go for the grab.
Step Three- As soon as you get the grab prepare yourself to start spotting your landing. Right when you see the water start turning for the backside 180.
Step Four- When you have completed both the spin and flip get ready to brace for impact. If all done correctly you will come down perfectly on the transition of the wake. Make sure to keep your eyes locked on the horizon and not to turn your head towards the boat. If you turn your head towards the boat you will continue to spin and slip out. Ride away clean and throw shakas for the gals in the boat. Now you have a big smile on your face and with your confidence you have from landing a new trick are ready to take on the world.

So that is how to do a Indy Back Roll to Backside 180. Best of luck.

winching in the woods

June 6th, 2008

You know what’s even more fun than finding excellent winching spots? Finding creepy, run-down, rotting, old houses in the middle of nowhere at the same time and calling them haunted. My friends and I have been scouting a lot lately. We found a little canal secluded into the woods, but still not too far from my home. It had concrete sides that were a little rough, but could potentially be sick for wall riding! I chickened out and only went up about 2 feet on the wall. Soon, I’m going to go back and conquer it after I put some more wax on the concrete. It’s weird how after someone buys a winch, he or she starts to develop “winch radar”. You start paying a lot more attention to water structures like you never have before. We were picking out rooms from the haunted house to stay the night in but shortly after, thought we should leave before the walls started to bleed. I’m glad we did because later on, I heard from some other mountain folk that the house was a place where people…well…cooked stuff that wasn’t exactly legal.Wake riding has been going really well too! The wake on our boat is dialed and literally kickin! After the Atlanta tour stop, I got to ride with Daniel Walden and some other Tennessee  riders on Lake Chattanooga. I also am officially done with community college and ready for Chico State next year! They have a really good wakeboard team as well so that’s also exciting! If any of you are still getting ready for finals, don’t be like Shawna, Shelby and I and fly crowded airlines the night before! Hope you all are having a great beginning of the Summer!

June 5th, 2008

The new iCopter high score is 3663. It appears I have to much time on my hands. Also Andrew got 3125 which is also extremely amazing. Wow our team is really stepping it up. I still haven’t left for Minnesota but I leave early in the morning. I will probably oversleep like I do everytime, then have to rush to the airport and try to get on a flight where because I wasn’t originally booked on so I get stuck in the middle seat. That happens to me alot. I need someone to wake me up like my Mommy used to do. And get my rumproast moving. Or maybe I should just travel with my sister. She is far more responsible than me and is always watching out for my best interests. I love her. Her name is Megan Joy Grasman. And after a lot of years of going to college she finally graduated on May 17, 2008. We are all so proud of her. She has a real job now and is jumping head first into the real world. Anyways once again I hope you are all out there pushing yourselves to the max. I always forget to talk about wakeboarding on here, but i think next post I want to give some trick tips. Maybe I will describe how to do an heelside indy back late backside 180. They are really fun. Definitely my favorite trick. Along with toeside beackside mute 180’s. Have an awesome day everyone!!!!! Maybe we can hang out in Minnesota.

Going Home

June 4th, 2008

Hello all. It appears that my iCopter score is still untouchable. Seeing as noone as come within a thousand points of it. Anyways I just got done doing my laundry. This time of year we pretty much get home take our dirty clothes out of the bag, into the washing machine and then directly back into our suitcases. So I actually just got done packing again. I am leaving for MN on Friday morning for the 3rd stop of the Mastercraft Pro WakeBoard Tour. And boy am I excited. Not for the tour stop though (although the Pro Tour is a very good time). On June 9 I am flying to Michigan to see my family (although June 9 is my 22nd birthday and I will be spending it traveling all day. No partying for me. Unless I get upgraded to first class where the drinks will flow like a river!). I haven’t been home since New Years and I am especially excited to get home pick up my boat and go ride. My parents live in Spring Lake, MI and it is the closest thing to heaven that I can imagine. And if the waves on Lake Michigan are alright I may even do some tow ins in the big lake. I will keep you guys posted. Waters 55 degrees though.
It is going to be amazing getting to wake up, take a longboard down the driveway, hop in the boat with my bros James Hindes, Nick Capisciolto, Jordan Konow, Zach Doornbos and Andrew Krikke. (haha name dropping my bros for sure) and take a shred set. Riding in Spring Lake feels like a small coastal town where everyone and everything is peaceful and beautiful. I will hopefully get some pics up for you guys. Anyways time to go to bed. Hope you are all out there pushing wakeboarding and remembering why you ride. Whether it be for personnel joy, to one up your friend, to show off for some ladies, for the feeling of landing that new trick or whatever else it may be. Wakeboarding can be anything you want it to be. There is no right or wrong. It is all right. As long as your smiling. Hopefully I will see you sometime soon.

SOOO I guess we have a blog page now!

June 4th, 2008

So I just got an email from Steve Bates our team manager. It was titled “Blog” and the body of the email was telling me that i need to Blog on the website because everyone else on the team has been Bloging there faces off and I haven’t done one yet. So with absolutely no excuse other then I didn’t realize we were doing this already here I am for your reading pleasure! The biggest problem that I am having with doing this Blog right now is that I don’t have anything to talk about at this particular time… oh wait…. Ok I have something… CWB TV #2. If you haven’t watched this episode yet go ahead and do it I will wait……………………………………………………. Pretty dang funny right? Man we had an awesome time doing that shoot. From the angle that we were shooting it from you really can’t tell but when Corey said that he almost drown building the pyramid he is being being very serious. Some of the other things that the video doesn’t show you is the temperature of the air when we were in the pool. I don’t know the exact temp but it was freezing. We spent at least 30 to 45 min looking at the water in the pool before anyone jumped in. I don’t know if anyone has picked it up yet from our teams silly antics but we all get along really well and have a great time doing the stuff we do. So look for some pretty funny stuff to happen over the course of the next year…

Peace out kids.

Back to the Basics

June 4th, 2008

Ok, so I have had some injuries that have put me out for a few days, but potentially could have been very serious. Over the last two and a half weeks, I have put my right arm through the handle while mastering the wake. Both times have been on transfer boxes, one which is at Gravity Research Center in Eastman, GA and the other the MasterCraft transfer box on the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour. So the first incident happened a few days before the ATL tour stop when I was transfering and I happened to fall on a backside 270 transfer and put my arm through the handle, I ended up bending the handle at a 90 degree angle and breaking the rope. I was only out for the remainder of the day and was able to continue wake dancing the next day. Now, we fast forward two and a half weeks to the Dallas Ft. Worth Tour Stop and I was riding in the semi finals on Sunday, I had stood up my first pass and was feeling really good on my second pass until I went to transfer the box toeside. I came off the top wrong and fell out the front and when I hit the water low and behold my arm was through the handle. All I could think about laying in the water in agonizing pain was not again, when the boat got back to me, they noticed that my bicep had broke a 4000 lb test wake line, and Travis Moye the MCPWT boat driver said that I stopped the boat. I took a few minute break and got a new rope and finished out my pass which was probably not such a good idea. I have been out for the past few days on this one, and my arm is black and blue and swollen pretty bad still. Hopefully I will be able to ride tomorrow considering we have the third stop of the PWT this weekend.
So out of all of this, one would have hoped that I learned one thing, and its one thing that we should all have learned when we first started riding…if you get in a pinch and there is no way of riding a trick out, throw the damn handle. So I, along with my other fellow wakers need to keep this in mind when wakeboarding.

Also, this is addressed to Derek, first off, my high score on iCopter is 978, which is not a thousand, but I am consistantly getting in the 7 and 8 hundreds…I want you to know that I am coming after each and every one of you.

This and That

June 4th, 2008

Its been awhile since i’ve been on here. I’d like to say its because i’ve crazy busy, or because little people stole my computer. Unfortunately thats not the case. I’ve been dealing with an adiction problem that finally i have conquered. Around the time of my last post, i was all about coffee. I enjoyed drinking it, alot, always had alot of energy, and was just stoked all the time. Over time, i started getting a tolerance for it, so i had to drink more and more to get the desired “high” i was looking for. Needless to say, coffee took over my life. My friends started getting worried, but i wouldn’t listen. Everyone in my life recognized the problem, but i was shoulder deep in my obsession and nothing could stop me. That all changed two and a half weeks ago. I woke up on that fateful day, and like always, drugged out the the kitchen to get my life medicine (coffee). And then it happened. All the coffee in the house had been removed!! I frantically searched, but it was nowhere to be found. My roommates, Kyle Alberts and Anthony Hollick, were already up. They were prepared to handle the havoc that took place. It was somewhat of an intervention. They sat me down and explained the problem to me, making me realize that my life had taken a downward spiral that could only lead to pain and suffering. Over the next couple days, i was like a zombie, barely getting by without my coffee. I couldn’t think, had the shakes, and was almost going crazy. Finally, on the 6th day, i woke up feeling normal. I had conquered my addiction!! Since then, i’ve learned to appreciate the little things in life that matter, like Orange Juice, and table tennis. I thank my roommates for helping me through my time of crisis, and am glad to say i ventured to the bottom of the deepest pits, encountered the worst of fears, and lived to tell about it.
So that may have been a bit of an exaggeration. I started typing without knowing where it would take me. Apparently my conscious is trying to tell me something, but whatever. Since my last post i’ve been traveling a little, and riding a whole lot. In the beginning of May, spent a week in northern California with Bryan Hutton, CM, and Matt. It was a pretty amazing trip. Started it off with a weekend at CIE’s Spring Ride, which is a double up contest that is probably the funnest contest i’ve ever been to. The CIE guys really know how to throw a contest/party. Plus, i got to see Ricky G stomp an indy pete; a trick that has never been done before. After the weekend of partying, B-Hut headed south, and i stayed up north with CM. On monday i was abe to ride with a couple of CM’s boys, Sean and Brett. We headed out to a lake that was created by a Dam. It was amazing to be riding, and turning around right next to the top of Dam, while seeing the drop off that went down hundreds of feet. The next day, tuesday, i went out to a rail jam at Sac State that Shelby Kantar and Daniel Doud had set up. Unfortunately that didn’t go so well for me. Being only my second week riding in about 9 months, i was a little rusty, and definitely got owned by the rail. On my last hit, i caught my heel edge and got the gnarliest concussion i’ve had in a couple years. I blacked out for about 10-15 minutes, which if you’ve ever experienced, it one of the scariest things in the world. When i came back around, i had no idea where i was, who i was, or what i was doing. I took the rest of the day easy, and was ready to go by the next morning. We woke up around 5:30 am on Wednesday to drive out to the local swimming hole to shoot on some butter with Spencer Smith. When we got to the lake, I almost wanted to kill myself. It was totally blown out, white-capping, and was only about 6am. Fortunately we found some good water, got some shots, and were able to rush to the airport in-time to get me out on my noon flight. Since then, i’ve been riding as much as possible in Florida, trying to get back to shredding like the good old days. Speaking of riding, the lake is butter right now and the boat is sacked out. . . . until next time i leave you with this thought, A ship in the Harbor is safe, but thats not what ships are built for.
