Quick blog on surfing Typhoon Lagoon

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

It all started with Trevor’s Bday party about 3 weeks ago. He decided to break the norm and have us rent out the wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon. It throws a 6 foot wave that can either be a left, right, or an A frame.
Yeaterday morning some of us rented it out again. I know you’re thinking why would I be playing around surfing so close to the comp season. Worry not the wave pool started cranking out A frames at 6 a.m. and we wrapped it up by 9. I was on the boat for a couple sets by 12. Enjoy the quick iPhone pic from yesterday morning. the guy paddling on the far side is Zane. I have a pretty good vid of it to but I don’t know how to post it to this blog. It’s on the team page under my tweets. It’s worth checking out! Andrew

Andrew Adkison Blog: The 2010 Season Begins

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

The 2010 WWA World Series started off with an impressive event — the first-ever Wakestock Abu Dhabi. Not just the riding, but the entire organization of the contest and trip. The laid-back atmosphere was a sharp contrast to the intense level of riding. There was so much to do at the actual site it was hard to step away to see the other sights of Abu Dhabi.

There is a lot to be said for receiving an invite to a comp and have your entire itinerary already organized and taken care of shortly thereafter. Etihad Airlines sponsored the event and took care of all of the riders’ travel. I’m not here to write an airline review, but I’ve spent my fair share of time at 35,000 feet, and I’ll definitely choose Etihad my next flight to the UAE. En route, we got in the competitive spirit by all playing Battleship against one another via the in-seat entertainment. That might as well have been first class.

There were a couple different comps going on throughout the weekend. Of course, there was the kickoff to the WWA World Series, but there was also an awesome Sesitec System 2.0 rail set-up on the boardwalk. We had two days to free-ride boat and the System 2.0 as much as we wanted. There was also a System 2.0 in the open water to keep us and the locals entertained during the down time.

The only element of the weekend that wasn’t controlled was the weather. Although beautiful, there was a consistent 20 mph onshore wind. The chop proved too much for the qualifying round as scheduled. The organizers and local media were guaranteed competitive riding on Friday so we came up with a solution — a System 2.0 comp on the open water with prize money going to the top three air tricks. Some of the guys bowed out, because they didn’t have much cable experience but 90 percent of the pack battled it out.

We basically ran five 20-minute, four-rider heats. Each rider got two down and backs before switching out. The time allowed each rider about five turns. The water was still rough, but it was more manageable because we were closer to shore and the speed was slower. Adam Errington took the top spot with his very first double S-bend to blind. JD Webb then hit his first double S to blind, but it wasn’t quite as clean as Adam’s. JD also came up with his first Pete Rose on the cable — a surprisingly big Pete Rose at that. Padiwat Jaemjan, a.k.a. Bomb, is no stranger to the cable and did a massive tail grabbed front to blind to lock up a solid 3rd. I finished up in the 4-6 range with the other guys who made a double-S bend. So we were able to turn a bad situation into something good, with the first cash pro air trick event on a two-tower cable system that I know of. Dallas Friday, Amber Wing and Nicola Butler also finished up solidly on the podium.

On Saturday, the final day of the event, Harley Clifford showed why he is the reigning MasterCraft Pro Tour Champion by throwing down an impressive variety of Mobe 5s and big spins in very dicey conditions. Rusty Malinoski and Phillip Soven followed closely on his heels, with solid podium finishes. That wasn’t the end of the action though!

The top six guys in the rail comp had to battled it out for the top spot and the custom Nixon watch. Just to make it to the final, JD had a very close heat with Aaron Rathy that could have been a final. Marc Rossiter did the same coming through Parks Bonifay’s side of the head-to-head bracket. In the end, JD edged out Marc in a super-close face-off that left the spectators and other riders speechless.

I usually would write about all of the behind the scenes action, but this event had so much it didn’t seem right to not give you the details from my point of view. This was a great kick-off to what will surely be a very competitive 2010 World Series. I’ll keep you posted on all of the upcoming events including Brazil, The UK, Wakestock in Canada, and of course, the finale at the WWA World Championships. — Andrew Adkison

Triple up! CWB gives you 3 ways to WIN WIN WIN!!!

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Yup – that’s right, 3 ways to win a truck load of gear. In the month of March, we are serving up Andrew Adkison, Gabe Lucas, and Clay Fletcher’s rides for you to score! It’s easy. Click on the riders pics below and fill out the forms. That’s it! No gimmicks, games, or spending a half of a day making a podcast. A podcast you say? We know you’re busy! Some companies like you to make silly videos about their products to win stuff. I guess they don’t have the time to make videos themselves. We have lots of videos. We make all our own videos w/ our pro riders, so you don’t have to. But I regress.

In case you want to watch a video about the products we are giving away, I’ve posted them for your viewing pleasure.

Ok – I lied, Andrew’s clinic isn’t done yet, you can blame Steve Bates for that. But here is Andrew being funny which is more interesting to watch than this podcast.

World Games 100,000 plus crowd tonight

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

I’ve been in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for the past week for the World Games. It has been a seriously impressive production. The city has put 8 years and $200,000,000+ into a 7 day sporting event. They were kind enough to have wakeboarding along for the ride. We just finished up the closing ceremony tonight with 100,000 plus people in and around the stadium for the closing.
There was an army of volunteeres to help us with any and everything we needed. The games themselves actually had 4000+ volunteeres.
The riding was from an impressive and international field. 16 countries were represented and in the end I was fortunate enough to come away with the gold.
I snapped a ton of photos on my actual SLR camera but for now I will leave you with an Iphone photo of the closing ceremony.
I’m heading to Tokyo, Japan tomorrow morning so I’ll keep some pics and updates coming. Andrew
P.S. I feel like I need to mention how amazing not only Trevors new haircut is but also his expression that really puts emphasis on the fact that is this best haircut of all time, and he knows it.

TSR is fuuun

Friday, May 8th, 2009

I spent 3 hours doing laps at TSR today after flying. This place never let’s me down. This is probably my 10th+ trip to TSR and I’m still just as excited as my 1st. I came to be a part of Cablestock and have a weekend full of water time. I’ll keep you posted on what’s going on but right now at 9:30 pm I’m heading to surf the river with Gabe Lucas and friends on the natural standing wave. This area has such a good vibe.

Wakegames 09 kicking off and had an awesome photo sesh this morning.

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Started off the day with a succesful shoot with Bill Doster from WBM. Matt Hickman, Craig Katilnick, and Scott Stewart were all part of making it happen as well. Perfect morning for it and D-Dub was kind enough to share the lake with us since he was shooting as well. Great morning, good time and we did what we set out to do.
After the shoot I rode with Scott Stewart to wakegames and watched the qualifer. Wow, there was some good riding going on today. I’m prequalified thanks to a 5th place overall king of wake finish for 08. It gave me a unique chance to just be a spectator at a pro event without the pressure of worring about my own ride. I really enjoyed watching everyone. Most all of the CWB team qualified In as well.
Overall a good day and now were headed back to Auburndale to freeride.

The Phillipines rule jet lag doesn’t

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

I arrived back home mid day yesterday from the kick off of the 09 WWA World Series which brought me to CWC in the Phillipines for 10 days. The trip, tournament ,and sight were amazing. However it’s now 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning and I am wide awake. This jet lag is going to take a few days to shake.
Later on in the day today I’ll be posting my full update of the amazing trip. For now I’ll leave you with an early morning picture from CWC and I’m going to make an attempt at getting back to sleep.

Aussie Pro Tour blogganza

Friday, January 16th, 2009

It recently came together that myself, Trevor Hansen, and Corey Bradley will be heading to Australia for the Aussie Pro Tour in late January and early February. Trev and I will be there for 18 days starting January 21st and Corey will pretty much be there the entire winter. I’m pretty psyched on this trip!!! Competing in the Aussie Pro Tour is just the start of it. We’re making tons of time to free ride some incredible spots, do some tow ins on the gold coast with Jeff Weatherall at snappers, and we’re going to be stopping in to many of the CWB dealers along the way.

I’m planning on documenting the entire trip right here at ridecwb.net/blog and on my personal website andrewadkison.com with daily blogs and photos. You’ll get to see all the stuff that usually falls through the cracks on these trips. I’ll get the entire schedule for the trip up soon. Big thanks to Justin Abbott, Kris Bowers and everyone else involved for making this trip happen.

If you’ve made it this far in this blog the next part is for you. I decided recently that coming into 09 I’m going to keep my website updated through all of my travels. There were so many great experiences in the last few seasons where myself and a few friends ended up in truly unique places to ride. Beyond the usual press release and photo of the podium so much more happens on these trips.
It is on a very regular basis that I am amazed with the places and the events that I’m fortunate enough to see through wakeboarding. And I hope you will be too. From some of the most scenic places that could possibly be ridden to staying in a haunted hostel( that’s a crazy story). I’m going to keep you posted. Wait, that sounded about like a tag line for this blog. You know like a, “stay classy San Diego”. I can do better than, “Keeping you Posted”

I’ve also been shooting photos of my travels for the past 4 years and plan on having photos to go along with a majority of the blogs and as well.

much to come, Andrew
