Don’t Let the “Hidden Layover” get you!

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Today was supposed to be fun; planed on riding in the morning, and traveling to Sacramento Ca in the afternoon to CIE’s Spring Ride. I came into the day with an awesome double up set in my backyard with my roommates at 9 Am in 80-degree weather, so things started alright. I then proceeded to get to Orlando Intl airport, and check in. My flight was booked through expedia, and upon reaching the ticket counter I discovered I had a layover in Milwaukee. Not exactly on the way to Ca from Fl, but I didn’t let it get me down. The lady at the ticket counter told me to get my ticket from Milwaukee to Ca once I got to my layover. Kinda odd, but I went along with it. Once in Milwaukee, in order to get my second ticket, I had to exit the airport, get my bag from baggage claim, re-check in, and pay AGAIN for my bag! I was a little pissed, but wasn’t the end of the world. But then I discovered I had a “hidden layover”!! What’s a hidden layover you ask? Its like the small print at the bottom of a free coupon that says nothing is actually free, or like the cute little puppy that gives you flies. It basically is a layover that the airlines hide and claim is a direct flight. It goes something like this; lets say you have a flight from Milwaukee to Sacramento, the hidden layover could be the plane stopping in Phoenix for 2 hours before continuing on to Sac. But wait, if it stops, shouldn’t that be a layover? Nope, you have to switch planes to make in an official layover. So, here I am, grumpy about paying for my bag again, and then getting stabbed in the back with my hidden layover in Az. If anything comes out of this 12-hour flight, it’s that I can share my experience of the “hidden layover” with all of you. Don’t let it happen to you!
